...make that tomorrow.

It's started, it has plot and characters, but I've hit a wall for tonight. Sorry, but I swear it'll get done.

Good GRIEF that took forever. Super short, but eh.

::School, Paris, and Pink::

Slamming locker doors, excited shouts to friends, and the occasional notebook hitting the tiled floor were just a few of the sounds filling the school hallway as the dismissal bell rang and everyone packed up to leave this sunny Friday afternoon. I slipped my science textbook into my backpack and slung it over my shoulder just as Erin and Katie joined me at their lockers on either side of mine.

"Sierra! Did you see the posters in Hall D?" Erin was practically bouncing up and down, her strawberry blonde ponytail swishing back and forth.

"How much coffee have you had today?" I asked her, laughing.

A contemplating frown replaced her beaming smile, but only for a moment. "Only two cups!"

"Two cups that you dumped six packs of sugar into--each." Katie said. Erin without her daily caffeine was scary, but a sugar-hyped Erin was worse. Katie steered the conversation back to the original topic. "So did you see the posters?"

I shook my head. "I don't have any classes in Hall D. Why? What posters?"

Katie grinned. "Come on!" she said as she grabbed my wrist and pulled me through the crowd toward the arts wing of the school. Erin grabbed her messenger bag and ran to catch up.

"Why can't you just--" I had to jump to avoid tripping over a guitar case, "--tell me what's going on?"

"This!" Katie gestured to a poster on the wall. A clip art of the Eiffel Tower took center stage, with scattered blocks of text in a flowery pink script around it. First Annual Judson High School Write-Off! the title shouted from the top of the page. Grand Prize: One Week Trip to Paris for the International Young Writers’ Conference!

“Uh…okay? So?”

Erin rolled her eyes. “So? Sierra, you’d win this thing, hands down. And look!” she pointed to one of the paragraphs. “You get to take two guests!” She pulled Katie to her side and they gave me the most ridiculous grins I’d ever seen.

So that’s what this is about.

Since beginning to take French as our foreign language freshman year, Erin and Katie dreamed of visiting France; Paris in particular. I would have loved it too, but those were fanciful dreams with little to no chance of ever happening. International trips were expensive to say the least, and we were too young to go off on our own.

I sighed. “Hate to be the pessimist guys, but I’m not that good. Besides, I’d be up against the entire Creative Writing Club. Those guys are amazing.

“I am, aren’t I?” a new voice said.

Erin sneered at the newcomer. “Oh, get lost, Jennifer.”

Jennifer raised an eyebrow and adjusted her pink rhinestone-studded glasses. “Hey, Sierra said it. She’s right, you know. I’m winning this thing. I could do it with my eyes closed.”

“Writing with your eyes closed? Sounds dangerous. You might forget to write ‘and I’m a jerk’ after your byline.” Katie taunted.

Jennifer glared at the two before turning her attention to me, who was currently trying to disappear. Jennifer Halsne was the CWC’s president and winner of the local newspaper’s “Teen Writers Competition”—two years in a row. Up against her, I didn’t stand a chance for the trip to Paris. “You don’t actually think you can write a better short story than me, do you?” NO! I wanted to scream, but looking at Erin and Katie’s determined faces…

I leveled her with a glare of my own. “I guess we’ll find out, won’t we?”
